The essence of social services as the main instrument of the social protection system in Ukraine is considered. The author presents a classification of social services by the features of orientation, type, place and term of provision. It is proposed to supplement the imperative classification with types of social services in accordance with the individual needs of their recipients. The functions of social services in the system of social protection of the population of Ukraine are defined
